Meet the Spix's Guan, a well-known bird in Suriname.
In Kabalebo you can meet 4 different guans:
- Little Chachalaca's
- Blue-throated Piping Guans
- Marail Guans
- Spix's Guans
The Spix's Guan (Penelope jacquacu) is also known as Marai for the locals. Some call them also bush chicken as these guans are hunted for their meat.
Spix's Guans are usually active during the mornings or afternoons. Those are the times that they are foraging for food. I have always seen these Guans either alone or as a couple. They are seldom seen foraging on the ground. Spix's guans are known as arboreal birds, most often seen in trees full of berries or seeds.
Spix's Guans are known as shy birds and most of the time you have to do all the 'hard work' to spot them, but occasionally they like to let their voice to be heard. And man, what a voice it has.
