Wildlife parenting: Ocelots
Just like any mother, female ocelots are also concerned about their own little ones well being.
In general ocelots are medium sized wild cats. Usually they reach till knee high. So imagine meeting a young ocelot. That is half the size of a full grown ocelot. Just like a cat, but a wild one. After a couple of months they are able to walk a great length of the territory with their mother by their side.
When I spotted Lotje with one of her little ones, you could clearly see that they are not yet aware of the real world. Still playful and totally depending on their mothers help. Even though they are only a couple of months old, they are already able to eat small preys, like birds, lizards or small mammals.
At a young age the young ocelots are trained for getting used to walk long distances both day and night. It may sound harsh but preparing the young ocelots to survive in the wild all by themselves is the best parenting in wildlife.
