This Spectacled Owl knows what take-out service means.
The Spectacled Owl is a common night visitor of the Kabalebo area. Seen more often compared with the Tawny-bellied Screech-Owl or the Crested Owl as he likes to move to see places. Sometimes we spot him sleeping inside the forest but most of the time we see him near the lodge, hunting.
The Spectacled Owl is known as a still hunter, one that likes to snatch sleeping birds from their hiding spot. Here is one of the first photo's taken from him while having diner; a Grey-breasted Martin.
Here is a more recent catch of the Spectacled Owl. Also an unfortunate Grey-breasted Martin. The Martins usually sleep under the roof of the lodge, where there is space available. Sometimes he also snatch a tanager. After he caught his prey, he will land in one of the tallest trees nearby.
Usually he doesn't make any sound while hunting, it is the call for help of his prey that tell us he is around. And the feathers that are falling out of a tree, indicating that he already started with his meal.
Whenever he doesn't feel comfortable, he will fly away into the dense bushes nearby. Talking about take-out.
